Matt Mahoney
My road to Fancy Real Estate was a bit off the beaten path. In fact, the road to the world of real estate in general was an unexpected life change for me.Before real estate my working life had been in the fine art world, working for fine art service companies in Chicago and then, after moving to Michigan, working for the GRAM, the Eli Broad Art Museum, and the Kalamazoo Institute of Art.
My wife, two sons, and I moved here over ten years ago from Chicago and we haven’t looked back since. We have grown to love everything the Grand Rapids area has to offer and continue to meet new and interesting people. My first foray into real estate came a few years ago when my wife and I invested in a few rental homes in the Belknap Lookout neighborhood. That’s when I left the museum world to focus on real estate and manage our rental properties.
As a property owner, I’ve learned a lot about the importance of the local leasing market, creating compatible rates, and finding the right tenant in a timely manner – a tenant that will not only be the best fit for the space but also feel comfortable in the space. I’m incredibly interested in following local real estate market trends, traditions, and the exciting future growth of this great area. I’ve also done a fair amount of carpentry work building decks, porches, storage spaces, finish carpentry, etc. which has given me a strong understanding of project estimating, material and labor costs and local code rules and regulations.
When not working you can find me attending our sons’ basketball, football, and soccer games, cooking, painting, playing bass guitar in a local 90’s cover band (The Yeti’s), gardening, or biking around Reed’s Lake in the summer months.

My journey in real estate began after an educational path that led from Muskegon Community College to Grand Valley State University. It was during my time in Grand Rapids that I recognized the immense potential of the area—a realization that fueled my decision to enter the commercial real estate sector.
